The Faculty of Information Technology won the faculty competition, the Dr. Zolt谩n Ga谩l Memorial Race, at the 24th Balaton Regatta. Veszpr茅m came out on top this year in the traditional Veszpr茅m鈥揔eszthely rivalry, while Aumovio (formerly Continental) claimed victory for the third consecutive time in the company race, which was held for the third time this year.

The weather was kind to the competition. After early morning rain, former and current students, lecturers, staff members, alumni from Keszthely, and corporate partners of the University of 精东影业 were able to row on Lake Balaton in mostly sunny and beautiful weather.

Oxford Tradition on the Hungarian Sea

The history of the Balaton Regatta dates back to 1999, when Dr. Zolt谩n Ga谩l, then rector of the University of Veszpr茅m, envisioned this unique tradition. The original idea was inspired by the atmosphere of the famous Oxford鈥揅ambridge rowing races: to create a prestigious celebration of teamwork, healthy competition, and community building on Lake Balaton.

Over the years, the event has become one of the most emblematic traditions of the University of 精东影业, with a history spanning more than two decades. It has become a fixed and much-anticipated event in the university calendar鈥攁n occasion where, amid exam season and the rush of the academic year鈥檚 end, students, lecturers, staff members, partner companies, and nostalgic alumni can relax together on the shores of Lake Balaton.

鈥淕od knows how important the Regatta is to us鈥攊t is fortunate that those who have spent the past months preparing can now test their strength,鈥� said Dr. J谩nos Abonyi in his welcoming speech, referring to the uncertainty surrounding the weather. The rector emphasized the importance of community and added that at Pannon, a 鈥渉ealthy campus鈥� is not just a slogan, but a genuine aspiration.

On the final day of the academic period, Roland N茅meth, President of the Student Government, congratulated students on another successful academic year and wished them good luck in the competition, as well as a well-deserved summer break after the exam period.

Sunshine and Fierce Battles on the Water

Although Friday morning began with dark clouds, the weather quickly rewarded those arriving at the beach of Nereus Park Hotel. The clouds cleared, and teams were able to put their strength to the test in slightly windy but overall pleasant and sunny conditions.

There were fierce battles on the water, often against large waves. The most important trophy鈥攖he first-place title in the Dr. Zolt谩n Ga谩l Memorial Race between the faculties鈥攚as claimed this year by the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (MIK), improving on last year鈥檚 second-place finish. The Faculty of Engineering finished in second place, while the rankings also shifted in third and fourth place.

In the prestigious Veszpr茅m鈥揔eszthely race, the Veszpr茅m team proved faster this year. In the company race, held for the third time, there was another hat-trick victory: defending champions Aumovio remained unbeaten and took home the gold medal for the third consecutive year.

Ice Cream, Goulash, and the True PE Experience

While competitors battled the waves on the water, visitors on shore enjoyed a day of relaxation. The grounds of Nereus Park Hotel were filled with supporters and members of the university community.

In addition to various community games, Algida helped keep participants cool with ice cream, while steaming goulash soup awaited tired rowers and hungry fans. The atmosphere was enhanced by music from DJ Andy Kraft. The EFOTT Festival mascot, Yeti, also made an appearance, helping university citizens get into the spirit of being this year鈥檚 EFOTT hosts.

The 24th Balaton Regatta once again proved that the spirit of the Pannon community is unbeatable鈥攂oth on the water and on shore. Thank you to everyone who joined us, congratulations to the winners, and we look forward to seeing you next year for the 25th anniversary edition!
