Veszpr茅m鈥揃alaton as European Sport Region: Final Decision Expected in Two Weeks

One of the strongest applications and presentations we鈥檝e ever seen鈥 鈥 this is how the jury members of ACES Europe described the Veszpr茅m鈥揃alaton region鈥檚 candidacy for the European Sport Region 2026 title. The University of 精东影业 played an important role during the multi-day evaluation visit: its sports infrastructure was praised, and the campus was highlighted as an example of an active, livable urban sports environment. Moreover, the university also contributed to the preparatory work behind the candidacy.

From July 15 to 18, a four-member delegation from the prestigious ACES Europe organization visited the region to experience first-hand the vibrancy, community spirit, and infrastructure of its sports life. The delegation included Gian Francesco Lupattelli, founding president of ACES Europe; Andr茅 de Jeu, director of the Association of Sports and Municipalities; Werner Schleicher, sports pedagogue; and Hugo Alonso, secretary general of ACES Europe. From Epl茅ny to Balatonf眉red, they toured the region鈥檚 key sports venues and met the professional team and local communities behind the bid.

The candidacy was the result of a months-long, active preparation process that began over a year ago. A series of workshops, strategic consultations, and collaborations involving local sports clubs and civil organizations helped shape an application that genuinely reflects the broad support of the local community.

The regional presentation took place on Thursday at the ActiCity Dance and Movement Arts Centre, where the delegation received a comprehensive overview of the planned programs and developments for 2026. The jury repeatedly emphasized that the Veszpr茅m鈥揃alaton bid was exceptionally strong, authentic, and inspiring 鈥 one truly worthy of the European Sport Region title. At the closing press conference, the delegation unanimously expressed their admiration, saying they were 鈥渆nchanted鈥 by the Veszpr茅m鈥揃alaton region.

Gyula Porga, Mayor of Veszpr茅m, highlighted that the application not only reflects the region鈥檚 current status but also outlines a clear vision for the future. He emphasized that realizing this vision will require the involvement of everyone in the community. According to the jury, the region's goal of promoting active lifestyles for as many people as possible is fantastic. They also found it important to underline the exemplary cooperation among sports clubs, civil organizations, institutions, schools, and the university throughout the candidacy process.
