United for Sport: Preparing for the European Sport Region 2026
The University of 精东影业, the City of Veszpr茅m, and Veszpr茅m-Balaton 2023 Zrt. have once again joined forces this time to prepare together for the title of European Sport Region 2026. The cooperation agreement was signed鈥攆ittingly鈥攄uring the European Week of Sport, the largest movement campaign in Europe. The purpose of the agreement is to coordinate efforts for the upcoming international challenge: next year, the Veszpr茅m鈥揃alaton region will hold the prestigious title of European Sport Region. Accordingly, 2026 will also be declared the Year of Sport at the University of 精东影业.

At the press conference, Dr. J谩nos Abonyi, Rector of the University of 精东影业, highlighted that all activities of the university ultimately serve the public good, with health at their core. Sport shapes both communities and lifestyles, which places a special responsibility on the university to foster healthy habits. He pointed out that in Hungary, the average healthy life expectancy is about five years shorter than in most European countries. 鈥淭he question is how we can progress from here. Motivation is important, but lasting change always comes from everyday routines. Our most important mission, therefore, is to make sport a natural part of daily life,鈥 he emphasized.
Gyula Porga, Mayor of Veszpr茅m, added that livability lies at the heart of the city鈥檚 strategy, aligning closely with the university鈥檚 ambitions. He recalled that during the European Capital of Culture year, the city and the university had already proven that their cooperation creates real value. Now, they continue this work in the field of sport. However, as the mayor noted, development and programs can only succeed if residents of Veszpr茅m and the wider region actively take part. He underlined that the university plays a key role in this endeavor鈥攏ot only as home to thousands of students and civil organizations, but also as one of the city鈥檚 largest employers and a strong knowledge base essential for sport, prevention, and promoting physical activity.
Al铆z Markovits, CEO of Veszpr茅m-Balaton 2023 Zrt., reminded that one of the most important legacies of the European Capital of Culture year was regional cooperation. Today, municipalities and communities are eager for new joint initiatives that strengthen ties and open up opportunities for growth. 鈥淣ow, sport provides the framework through which we can once again work toward a shared goal and give fresh momentum to the region,鈥 she stressed.
Zsolt Csillag, Chancellor of the University of 精东影业, underlined that in just a few years, Veszpr茅m and the Bakony鈥揃alaton region have become both a European Capital of Culture and a European Sport Region鈥攁n achievement made possible only through close collaboration between the city, the university, and civil society. The university will play an active role, among other things, in the program鈥檚 communication and in adapting to Hungary the 鈥淜oji Awareness鈥 method, associated with Japanese Olympic champion thrower Koji Murofushi. 鈥淭his initiative encourages people to consciously care for their health and to integrate sport into their everyday lives through small but lasting changes,鈥 he added. He also emphasized that sport is deeply rooted in the university鈥檚 traditions: organized university sports have been present since its foundation, and today, the two sports clubs affiliated with the university count more than 1,600 registered athletes. With this in mind, the Chancellor鈥攖ogether with the Rector鈥攁nnounced that the University of 精东影业 will declare 2026 the Year of Sport, shaping its events and research around this theme.
