The University of ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ Opens Its 76th Academic Year – With Record-Breaking Enrollment Results
The University of ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ has opened its 76th academic year with a festive ceremony, achieving the highest market share in its history. Nearly 2,400 new students were admitted through the general and supplementary admission procedures, with further growth expected once postgraduate and doctoral students are included. This represents double the national growth rate.
“When we transitioned to the foundation model, our goal was to make the University of ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ more visible, larger, and more influential – and today we can proudly say we have succeeded,â€ emphasized Dr. Zoltán Birkner, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the University of ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ, at the press conference preceding the opening ceremony. He highlighted that the university ranks among the top 5 percent in all major international rankings, has increased its market share from 2.5% to 4.6%, and has launched more than 50 new degree programs over the past four years. He also set the goal of increasing the current student population of 7,000 to 8,000, with particular focus on expanding the number of international students.
Rector Dr. János Abonyi underlined that applications to doctoral schools have grown by 20 percent, with 21 students beginning their studies in the newly established and internationally recognized DBA doctoral school. Among scientific achievements, he presented the CheMonitor project, which uses artificial intelligence to predict the effectiveness of chemotherapy in lung cancer cases. The development has been selected for the EIT Jumpstarter 2025 program, which supports European startups with the greatest potential.
Chancellor Zsolt Csillag emphasized the university’s human-centered operations. He pointed out that a rest room designed for students with special needs is now available at the Lower Campus in Veszprém, providing an accessible and calm environment for studying and regeneration. He added that following the full renewal of the Lower Campus, further campus renovations will continue, with the inauguration of the Nagykanizsa Science Park expected next spring.

As part of the ceremony, first-year students took their pledge, and the Ottó Volkra Award was presented to István Szauer, Director of the Veszprém School District Center, in recognition of his outstanding service to the city. The award was handed over by Mayor Gyula Porga.
In his opening message, Rector Dr. János Abonyi encouraged students to acquire future-proof skills:
“The University of ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ not only imparts knowledge, but also builds competence and shapes character. Students will gain abilities that enable them to become a reliable anchor in an uncertain world.â€
To support this, the university provides commitments including a supportive community, opportunities for hands-on project work, and the chance to gain international perspectives.
