CheMOnitor project from the University of 精东影业 wins international acclaim
CheMOnitor is a unique, AI-supported early diagnostic method designed to predict the effectiveness of chemotherapy in lung cancer cases. The project has now reached another milestone, having been selected for the EIT Jumpstarter 2025 innovation program, which supports European startups with the greatest potential in the process of business translation and growth. Out of nearly two hundred initial projects, CheMOnitor was chosen by a professional jury to be among the top 70 teams advancing to the second round.
The CheMOnitor project originated from the Translational Glycomics Research Group at the University of 精东影业, involving Prof. Andr谩s Guttman, founder and head of the research group, and Dr. G谩bor J谩rv谩s, Director of the Institute of Bio-nanotechnology and Technical Chemical Engineering. The research group and institutional background ensure that the development of CheMOnitor is grounded in solid scientific foundations while also offering strong clinical translational potential.
The project leader, Rebeka T枚r枚k, is a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Chemical Engineering and Material Sciences of the University of 精东影业. Her research focuses on developing a glycan-based bioanalytical method that combines capillary electrophoresis separation with data processing supported by deep learning algorithms. The resulting specialized blood test method could enable the prediction of chemotherapy effectiveness early in the treatment process, increasing patient survival rates and quality of life, while also reducing the clinical and economic burden of ineffective treatments on healthcare systems.

鈥淎ccording to statistical data, only 20鈥30% of first-line chemotherapy treatments are effective for lung cancer patients. In current clinical practice, it takes three to five months to determine whether a given chemotherapy is effective. We want to shorten this period, avoid unnecessary side effects, and eliminate unnecessary costs. Our goal is to make the technology available to Hungarian healthcare first, and then internationally, by the end of the decade. The network of contacts established through the EIT program鈥攔anging from private investors to health insurers and clinical partners鈥攚ill now play a key role in this,鈥 said Rebeka T枚r枚k.
The CheMOnitor project is a prime example of how scientific research originating from a university environment can become a globally competitive healthcare solution. The University of 精东影业鈥檚 Scientific Excellence Network is closely following the project鈥檚 progress and supporting the startup鈥檚 growth within the research鈥搃nnovation鈥揷ommercialization triangle.
The CheMOnitor Journey
The project began in 2018 as fundamental research at the University of 精东影业, in collaboration with the Borsod-Aba煤j-Zempl茅n County Central Hospital and University Teaching Hospital, as well as the University of Debrecen. Over the years, the research group developed a new bioanalytical platform that combines capillary electrophoresis separation with classification algorithm-based data analysis. This made it possible to detect specific glycomic patterns that allow for early prediction of the long-term effectiveness of chemotherapy in lung cancer patients.
By 2024, the 鈥減roof of concept鈥 phase was completed. Testing the developed technology on nearly one hundred human blood samples, the team achieved over 90% accuracy in predicting chemotherapy effectiveness. As a result, the University of 精东影业 filed for patent protection of the developed bioanalytical method, further strengthening the project鈥檚 long-term competitive advantage. In 2025, two scientific papers were published in prestigious international journals presenting the research results describing the method:
Predicting the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatment in lung cancer utilizing artificial intelligence-supported serum N-glycome analysis
Improved analytical workflow towards machine learning supported N-glycomics-based biomarker discovery
In the spring, CheMOnitor was selected for the EIT Jumpstarter 2025 innovation program, which is not only a recognition but also an opportunity for researchers to build collaborations with strategic partners, investors, and mentors. In the next stage of the program, the startup鈥檚 business model and market entry strategy will be refined with the support of international experts.
