Celebrate the holidays the Hungarian wayÂ

Spending the holidays abroad can feel both exciting and nostalgic — a time when you miss home a little more but also discover new traditions that stay with you forever. At the University of ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ, students from around the world come together to celebrate the season in a welcoming community that quickly feels like family.
A season of lights and traditions
Hungary’s holiday season begins with Advent, when cities and homes fill with warm lights, candles, and festive decorations. Many students join in creating their own Advent wreaths, lighting a new candle each Sunday as Christmas approaches — a calming ritual amidst busy studies.
On December 6, the celebration of Mikulás (St. Nicholas) brings a joyful surprise. Children — and students too! — wake up to small gifts, chocolates, and notes placed in polished boots by “Mikulás. It’s a charming tradition that brings a sense of childhood magic back to everyone.
Across Hungary, Christmas markets transform town squares into cozy winter villages. In Veszprém, students love warming up with forralt bor (mulled wine), trying local pastries, browsing handmade crafts, and enjoying the lights and music. It’s a beautiful place to make memories with friends from all over the world.
A home away from home
At ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ, the holiday spirit is all about community. Students decorate dorms together, exchange small gifts, cook festive meals, and share traditions from their home countries. For many, these moments become their favorite memories of studying abroad — proof that home is something you can build wherever you are supported, welcomed, and understood.
Experience the warmth of a Hungarian winter
Whether you're enjoying your first cup of hot chocolate at a Christmas market, celebrating Mikulás with friends, or simply taking in the charm of winter around Lake Balaton, the holiday season in Hungary offers comfort, connection, and a sense of belonging.
